I'm Road Tripping the Merkur. What Do You Want To Know?

Okay so it’s not really ‘road tripping’ per say, but on Thursday I am taking my 1986 Merkur XR4Ti bought from Hardigree on the longest (hopefully) uninterrupted drive since I bought the thing. I’m also bringing a friend and some cameras so look out for a video coming very soon.

So my question to you is, what do you want to know about the car? What should be included in the video? Do you care to see some of the weird quirks that gives the car character? You want to see some of the finer roadside attractions on the trip? (of which, I’ll admit there are very few.) Do you struggle with the correct pronunciation of Merkur? Are you a strange individual that cares about MPGs?

Let me know your questions below, because I want to answer them.

Isn’t this the one that has the welded rear diff?

Are you expecting the car to be comfortable?

Rear diff was swapped for a standard non-welded unit before I bought the car.

Didn’t you buy this last year?

You’re correct. Strange wording, the trip is happening on Thursday. All fixed, thanks for pointing it out!

Both my friend and I are musicians so we are headed to Sweetwater Sound in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Very much like Guitar Center on steroids. There’s also a very lovely exotic car dealer not too far from there that I’m going to drag my friend to. Not a very long drive but a couple hundred miles round trip is pretty daunting in this thing. Not having any real issues with the car at the moment, hope it stays that way! haha

Would not be the strangest thing to happen around here that’s for sure.

I was about to ask if you wanted to meet up, but 260 miles round-trip (I’m just south out Indianapolis) in the 924 would make your Merkur journey look like a breeze. It’s a 4 speed, so 70 mph is almost 4000RPM. And it has a supremely loud exhaust.

Are you coming to Chicagoland?

Haha I'm sure. My 5th gear is practically just another 4th. Not even 1000 revs between them so my trip is going to be fairly noisy as well. Probably nothing compared to you though haha

This coming Sunday there’s a huge Car Show in Sycamore, Il. And, as you know, Midwest Merkurs is just north of the city with it’s mini Merkur Graveyard..

Good luck and godspeed. Do you have any way to mount a camera low on the bumper? Those shots always turn out cool when you are bombing down some winding back roads.
